Dorothy J. Ryder, age 83 of Eldorado, Illinois passed away on
Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in her home with family by her
Dorothy was born November 7, 1933 in Galena, Missouri to
Freda (Curtis) Asher Duffer and Elmer Asher. On May 10,
1952, she married Herbert Anderson (Herb) Ryder, Sr. in
Family and church meant everything to Dorothy. She was
known far and wide, to many, as ‘Aunt Dot’ or ‘Granny’. She
nourished those around her with her love, faith and food. She
was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church,
serving God and her fellow members at her beloved Brush
Creek Campground for 46 years, cooking many meals and
serving as Deacon. She also served as Deacon in her Eldorado
congregation where she taught many children about the love of
Jesus Christ and supported the international church at large.
Dorothy loved to cook for family and friends. Some favorite
recipes were chicken and dumplings, biscuits and gravy, cherry
delight, strawberry freezer jam and caramels. The list goes on.
Her favorite community outreach programs included: Star
Church Clothes Closet in Eldorado and Community of Christ
food pantry in Thompsonville, Illinois.
Over the years, Dorothy held many jobs, but her favorite was
working for Edminster Accounting during tax season for many
Her most important vocation was staying home and raising her
children. Dorothy is survived by all of her children: Herbert
Anderson, Jr “Andy” & Peggy, Robert Bradley & Suzette,
Kenneth Gene & Heather, Dawn Marie, Joseph Nelson & Tara.
Dorothy has 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one
great, great grandchild. She is also survived by her siblings:
Kathy White, Mary Morris, Norma (Don) Ericson & Sidney
(Nancy) Duffer, plus many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-inlaw,
nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband,
Visitation will be held at Watson’s Funeral Home in Eldorado,
Illinois from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017.
A Celebration of Life service will also be held at Watson’s
Funeral Home in Eldorado, Illinois at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday,
January 15, 2017. A dinner will follow at the Community of
Christ Church at 35 Wasson Rd., Eldorado, Illinois.
Interment of Dorothy’s ashes will be at Brush Creek Cemetery
in Xenia, Illinois during the Summer of 2017.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
Community of Christ Brush Creek Campground fund.
